My Journey Unveiled
Before embarking on my Arabic Journey, I found myself hesitant to take the first step. Various assumptions plagued my mind, such as the belief that this path was reserved only for scholars, doubting my own abilities, and fearing the challenges of learning a new language. Unfortunately, I was unknowingly holding myself back with these self-fulfilling prophecies. I decided to challenge these negative notions head-on, determined to prove myself wrong. This decision marked a pivotal turning point, leading me to the remarkable journey I am on today.
More than a decade ago, I took the leap and began my Arabic studies through private online lessons with a teacher based in Egypt. Subsequently, I delved into various courses offered throughout the UK. Despite my initial enthusiasm, the focus on grammar rules over several years left me feeling strained and disheartened due to the lack of substantial progress.
Determined to overcome these challenges and driven by my desire to understand the Quran and other classical Arabic texts, I decided to travel to Egypt. Enrolling in an institute, I shifted my approach to a more conversational style of learning. Immersed in the language and surrounded by Arabic speakers, my excitement soared. However, after nine months at the institute, I felt the need for a more personalized and focused approach.
Opting for private studies, I embarked on a journey to expedite my learning process. I also switched to a syllabus with a strong Islamic orientation, incorporating Quranic verses and hadith. Despite a year of intensive studies abroad, I still struggled to find my footing in Arabic.
Eager to make quick progress, I rushed through the textbooks, but this approach proved counterproductive. I encountered difficulties retaining new vocabulary and comprehending previously studied passages. My ability to use new words in conversation was also limited, as I clung to familiar vocabulary that sufficed for basic communication in Egypt. Discussing my challenges with fellow students, I realized many were grappling with similar issues, each with their own untested theories on effective language retention.
Determined to overcome these obstacles, I took matters into my own hands. I embarked on an experimental journey, exploring various methods to enhance vocabulary retention, improve speech, and comprehension. I diligently tracked my progress, refining and adapting my approaches along the way. My quest for answers led me to investigate proven language acquisition techniques and sought guidance from Islamic literature.
After persistent experimentation and research, I finally discovered a comprehensive solution that transformed my learning experience. Armed with newfound knowledge, I revisited my previous studies, applying the successful formulas I had developed. This brought about the progress I had always envisioned.
​Reflecting on my journey, I can't help but wish I had access to this guidance, advice, and methodology from the very beginning. Regrettably, I wasted valuable time, but it doesn't have to be the same for you.
